- The Green Spot
3041 Notre-Dame St. West
Montreal, QC H4C 1N9
Hours Open: 5:00 am – 11:00 pm
(514) 931-6473
Hot dogs, pizza & poutine with thick-cut fries are some of the choices at this old-school diner.
- Cosmos Snack
5843 Sherbrooke Street West
Montreal, QC H4A 1X4
(514) 486-3814
Pint-sized diner that's a local institution for hefty eats like their famous 6-egg omelet.
Look, the legendary nature of the food does not disappoint, but depending on the day the
service can be slow. Nick and Nicky have kept everything the same as when Tony ran the
place, including variable pricing based on the general mood at the moment. All and all I
have never been let down, and I come back for a quick (or slow) bite every once in a while.
- Romados
115 Rue Rachel East
Montréal, QC H2W 1C8
Hours Open: 6:30 am – 10:00 pm
(514) 849-1803
You say Portuguese chicken, I say Romados. In fact, just about any Montrealer would
agree. This hole-in-the-wall is a local favorite, and it's also believed to be the “Best
Portuguese Chicken in Montreal”. I don’t know about “best” but those ghastly lineups on the
corner of de Bullion and Rachel East speak the truth. That chicken. Those fries. That
heavenly spicy sauce. It’s no wonder everyone’s hooked.
If you’re in a rush, call ahead and line up in the express/pick-up lane on the left. Drop-ins,
stay on the right and prepare to wait. My usual order is the half chicken combo ($9.75).
Prices have gone up, but it’s still a whole lot of chicken and fries, a pitiful salad and a bun
for a notably cheap price. It can easily feed two people, or one really, really hungry human.
- Resto La Banquise
994 Rachel Street East
Montréal, QC H2J 2J3
http://labanquise.com/en/poutine-menu.php
Ooie Gooie Good Poutine - Regular visitors to Montreal believe that a trip to the city isn’t
complete without sitting down
to one food in particular–poutine. A Quebec-original dish, classic poutine consists of French
fries topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Additional ingredients can be added as
well. Visitors and locals a like claim La Banquise is one of the best places in Montreal for
poutine -they have over 25 varieties to choose from! This cheap eats favourite starts at
under $7.
- Decarie Hot Dog.
953 Decarie Boulevard
St. Laurent, QC H4L 3M3
Hours Open: 6:00 am – 1:00 am
(514) 748-7213
Feel like a hot dog? Head to Decarie Hot Dog. This place is a food institution in Montreal.
Sit down and enjoy two dogs, fries and a pop for under $7. They’re also famous for their
poutine.
- Cachitos
3 St. Catherine Street West
Montreal, QC H2X 3V4
Hours Open: 8:00 am – 8:00 pm
(514) 500-6259
Cachitos are a Venezuelan savoury pastry that is filled traditionally with ham and cheese.
These are not empanadas- they’re shaped similarly to croissants, and the bread that keeps
the fillings in is soft and fluffy. A variety of fillings are offered at Cachitos (located on
St Catherine East at de Bullion) - from ham and cheese, to ground meat, to spinach and
ricotta, to chorizo and more. Each Cachito is between 3 and 4 dollars and taste distinctly
homemade. They’re served with a delicious creamy garlic sauce. Brace yourself for the
amazing fresh-baked bread smell as soon as you enter- this place is a bakery too.
- Vua Sandwiches
1579 St. Denis Street
Montréal, QC H2X 3K3
(514) 439-1231
I’ve extolled the virtues of banh mi before, and have always loved them for the mix of a
perfect baguette with extremely flavourful meat, pickled carrots and daikon, with sweet,
spicy and garlicky sauces and cilantro. They’re more often than not a very price-effective
meal choice, but Vua Sandwiches in the Latin Quarter knocks it out of the park. They have
the option of small or large, and the small (7-inch) banh mis start at $2.95, and the large
(10-inch) start at $3.25. The most expensive options are $3.75, and they offer 15 different
types. They also have other types of sandwiches, sushi, and Vietnamese iced coffee, but
if you want the most bang for your buck, just get what they’re known for: a banh mi.
- Slovenia Boucherie/Charcuterie
3653 St. Laurent Boulevard
Montreal, QC H2X 2V5
Hours Open: 9:00 am - 7:30 pm
(514) 842-3558
http://www.boucherieslovenia.com
This Slovenian butcher shop and eastern-European grocery store is often walked by and
rarely explored by the average St Laurent Blvd pedestrian. However, they sell amazing,
huge sandwiches filled with meat being smoked all day long in-store. The spicy sausage is
my favourite, but the veal sausage is also amazing. I’ll be returning to try the salami, the
“special mix”, and the regular smoked meat one. A nice sesame bun, lots of spicy mustard,
sausages and the option for sauerkraut is all that makes up these amazing and simple
sandwiches, and they’re all available for $3.75-$4.75. If you’ve got a little extra change in
your pocket, they go amazingly with a black cherry soda.
- La Chilenita
130 Roy Street East
Montreal, QC H2W 1L9
(514) 286-6075
La Chilenita, now located on Roy and de Bullion across from Else’s, is famous for their
empanadas. They’re pretty big and stuffed near-to-bursting with a variety of fillings- my
favourites are L’italiana (filled with spicy chorizo, tomato sauce, and cheese), La Napolitana
(stuffed with artichokes, feta cheese, tomato, mozzarella cheese and green olives), and La
Chilena (ground beef, onions, egg, and black olives). All empanadas are $3.10 each, or
you can buy in bulk with a few friends and end up getting them for about $2.50 each.
Either way, it’s a fantastic on-the-way to somewhere food- very portable, and very
flavourful.
- Wilensky’s
34 Fairmount Avenue West
Montréal, QC H2T 2M1
Hours Open: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
(514) 271-0247
For no nonsense cheap snacks, head over to Wilensky’s. This family-owned diner opened in
1932 and is kind of an institution in Montreal. If you do find yourself in the Mile End area,
we highly recommend the Wilensky Special: a sandwich made with all-beef salami and all-
beef bologna with mustard, grilled on a roll ($4.09). With delicious food this cheap, why
would you go anywhere else?
- Caribbean Curry House
6892 Victoria Avenue
Montreal, QC H3W 1B8
Hours Open: 11:00 am – 9:00 pm
(514) 733-0828
This curry house has been providing tasty roti and stew plates to the Montreal populace
since 1980. Their roti is crepe-like dough made with split peas and spices, and filled with a
thick seasoned curry containing potatoes and meats such as chicken, beef, goat, or seafood.
There is also a veggie roti option available. The stew chicken ($10.50) is highly
recommended; marinated chicken cooked in a golden brown stew sauce mixed with red
beans. Beverage-wise, you’ll have to get a Red Stripe beer ($4.95) to make your experience
as authentic as possible.
- Patati Patata Friterie De Luxe
4177 St. Laurent Boulevard
Montreal, QC H2W 1Y7
Hours Open: 8:00 am - 2:00 am
(514) 844-0216
This small fast food joint boasts one of the best poutine in town (the fries to cheese ratio is
perfect), and all for less than $10. They also offer mini slider burgers that you can
customize yourself. Order one of these tasty morsels and the waitress will hand you a
checklist to tick off which toppings you would like. Patati Patata is perfect for pre or post
adventure fuel. Cheap and delicious – just how we like it.
- Omnivore Grill
4351 St. Laurent Boulevard
Montreal, QC H2W 1Z8
Hours Open: 11:00 am –10:00 pm
(514) 303-5757
This simple, no-frills Middle Eastern restaurant delivers tasty grilled food items for both
herbivores and carnivores. The flavors of their beef, chicken and fish sandwiches (known
here as Kaftas) take inspiration from cuisines all over the world, with names like Thai,
Roma, and Bombay. All kaftas can be ordered as vegetarian also. To get the most bang for
your buck, we recommend the soup, salad, and sandwich combo for $10.50.
